Sir Malcolm Sargent’s legacy
Sir Malcolm Sargent left a huge legacy in terms of his musical contribution. His legacy also lives through The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund which became Young Lives vs Cancer. The charity was set up in his memory to help support young cancer patients.

As chief conductor of the Proms from 1948 to 1967, Sir Malcolm Sargent gained his widest fame, making the “Last Night” into a high-ratings broadcast celebration. He was noted for his witty addresses to the audiences.
In October 1967, not long after his last appearance at The Last Night of the Proms, Sir Malcolm Sargent died. His long-term friend Sylvia Darley OBE set up the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in 1968 in his memory.
RobinWhen Sir Malcolm Sargent died and Sylvia Darley started his cancer fund for children I commenced giving to the fund as a thank you for all the many hours of pleasure he had given me at the Proms ... Then when my son died from Hodgkin Disease, five years ago, I realised again just what a great cause your charity is and this renewed my efforts, hence the gift in my Will. Sir Malcolm was a great man and it is truly fitting that he is remembered in this way.”
In 2005 Sargent Cancer Care for Children merged with CLIC to form CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer care charity for young cancer patients.
In May 2021, we changed our name to Young Lives vs Cancer. New name, same purpose, pride and passion.
