CLIC Sargent concludes change consultation

CLIC Sargent Chief Executive Rachel Kirby-Rider discusses the conclusion of the charity’s change consultation:

“CLIC Sargent has recently concluded one of the most difficult processes in the charity’s history. We, like many in the sector, saw our fundraising income devastated in the face of the Covid-19 outbreak. In a very short period of time, it became clear that the organisation was facing an income drop of approximately £9 million, with the usual methods of raising funds either negatively impacted or cut off entirely.

“With calls for any government support seemingly prompting little response, we underwent a change consultation process as we faced the tough reality that the charity would have to be smaller and prioritise protecting our core frontline services that are so absolutely vital for children and young people with cancer and their families.

“Following a 30-day consultation process with our staff, during which they engaged with great integrity and understanding, we have decided to proceed with changes which will result in between 30 and 35 redundancies.

“I’m so proud of every member of staff at CLIC Sargent, and their endless dedication to supporting children and young people affected by cancer. It is heart-breaking to have to lose any of them. However, the charity found itself in a position where change was absolutely necessary in order to protect its vital services, move past this period of great uncertainty, and be in the best place to expand again when those opportunities come in the future.

“Throughout this whole process we have always kept our focus on what is most important, the children, young people and families who are facing cancer amid this outbreak. It is hard to imagine how difficult it must be to deal with the emotional trauma of a cancer diagnosis, the fears over treatment, side effects, the financial impact and the everyday anxiety of keeping a family together, all amid a pandemic outbreak which is taking a toll on everyone in the UK. We know that CLIC Sargent is needed more than ever before and that is why we knew that the difficult decisions had to be made, so that we are still here for every one of those young cancer patients and their families, now and into the future.”

Notes to editor

About cancer in children and young people

Today, 12 more children and young people in the UK will hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Although survival rates are over 80%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people in the UK.
