Fight Club: Lewis’ story. “I’ll never tire of volunteering.”

You supported Lewis when he was diagnosed with leukaemia aged 17. He now volunteers on our Voice Board, which puts those who’ve been through childhood cancer at the heart of everything we do.

“I knew I wanted to volunteer for Young Lives vs Cancer after the brilliant help I received. It’s no exaggeration to say the charity, social workers and supporters like you had a massive impact on my life.

“You helped me adjust to all the overwhelming changes that came with treatment. And you also helped me to come to terms with everything that had happened once I was in recovery. Because of that incredible support, I wanted to show my eternal appreciation and give back.

“I get to make change for young cancer patients of the future.”

“I first started volunteering by sharing my story on the website and social media, then at fundraising events. Now I volunteer on the Voice Board, a young person and parent-led focus group.

“The group meets regularly to discuss how to improve the service received by children and young people with cancer and their families. It’s exciting as I get to share my personal experiences and opinions to help the charity’s trustees and directors make positive change for young cancer patients of the future.

“Recently we’ve worked on the campaign for a Young Cancer Patient Travel Fund to help cover the cost of travelling to treatment. In this project, we’ve helped shape what the travel fund should look like, delving into all the grey areas to ensure it will cover all the support young cancer patients need.

“I would say to anyone thinking of volunteering to just do it.”

“How does volunteering make me feel? Being able to contribute to and enable incredible work means the world. I know first-hand what we do can reignite hope in young people and families desperately in need. That’s more than enough motivation for me.

“I would say to anyone thinking of volunteering to just do it. There’s nothing like the immense feeling of giving your time to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer. I’ll never tire of volunteering.”
