Hassan’s story

Hassan was just 19 and in his second year at university when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. To those who knew him, Hassan was so much more than his diagnosis. He was a kind, private and much-loved young man with a huge passion for football. Whether he was watching a match, playing the game himself or working as a steward for Luton Town FC, football was a big part of his life.

After his diagnosis, Hassan made the incredibly difficult decision to put his university studies on hold so he could concentrate on his treatment. He underwent chemotherapy and spent much of his time in hospital.

It was there that he met Mikela, his Young Lives vs Cancer specialist social worker. Before long, Mikela became someone Hassan trusted – someone he could speak to openly and honestly. His sister, Sadia, remembers how important that relationship became.

Sadia said: “You can speak to your family members, but sometimes it can be difficult for them to hear things like, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’ because you want them to keep fighting. I understood Hassan became tired but our family couldn’t come to terms with his condition.

“With Mikela, Hassan could speak openly. He was a very private person, but she made him feel comfortable. They built a bond where he knew he could talk to her confidentially, without feeling judged.”

Mikela’s support extended beyond Hassan. She was also there for his family, helping them access practical support, including grants for food and travel, as well as items that gave Hassan a welcome distraction during his long periods in hospital.

Sadia said: “Mikela was a huge support for Hassan and I. We both were able to let our emotions out individually without feeling judged. We didn’t enjoy the hospital food, and eating the same things repeatedly became too much. Mikela knew about a charity that could help fund food for us, and we had the money by the end of the week which helped us buy food that Hassan liked. Her knowledge and support helped us so much.”

Sadly, Hassan was not responding to treatment as hoped and he was due to begin radiotherapy. Just days before his radiotherapy was due to begin, Hassan passed away peacefully at the age of 20 with family by his side.

For Sadia and her family, the loss of Hassan has been incredibly painful. But the support they received during his illness gave them comfort during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Sadia said: “As a family, we have gone through and still going through the pain of losing someone we love so deeply. The support we had, especially from Mikela, helped us so much.

“I still have contact with Mikela and Young Lives vs Cancer, and I’ll always be grateful for everything they did for Hassan and our family.”

Hassan’s love of football continues to be remembered through a special partnership with JD Wetherspoon, who have created a football-shaped pin badge inspired by his story.
